Summer Holidays

I’ve allocated the following project to my summer holidays: To write and record at least 5 music tracks off the NES games in a rock style. Many sleepness nights of excitement and countless numbers of ideas are leading up to this NES music extravaganza! I’ll be sure to keep you updating in the not too distant future with my progress and new ideas!

In the mean time here are two songs of my childhood/current age I’m sure to cover,as they are just so damn cool!

Are you serious!? Why isn’t this in the top 20!?

Maybe not as good as Gremlins, but still pretty funky.

Classical Music

I have an occasional love for classical music and so I decided to record two of my favourite classical, or possibly musical pieces of all time, even though one is quite modern and features in the film “Deer Hunter”.

The first one is an excerpt from the second movement of Beethoven’s 5th piano Concerto, or more popularly known as the “Emperor Concerto”. I decided to take it a bit in my own direction with a different emotional perspective, perhaps a little more aggressive than the original intention. I also improvised around the ending to conclude the piece in my own style.

The second piece is the theme from “The Deer Hunter”, a 1978 film by Michael Cimino. It was composed by Stanley Myers, and is one of my all time favourite musical pieces. I rarely get a chance to use my classical guitar which was actually my first guitar I ever had, handed down from my mother and restrung left handed, and which now looks

like its been thrown into a pit of angry cats who haven’t scratched anything for 6 years. This piece allowed me to bring that guitar out again which was nice, however the backing guitar is done on my Maton acoustic. I’ve cut out most of the piece but put in the parts that count. Enjoy!

New Guitar

Yay I’m excited! I ordered my new guitar today! Now it’s not exactly too easy to find what you want when your disadvantaged like myself. Yes the curse of the dominant left hand has been layed upon me since birth, but I prefer to think of it as an opportunity rather than an inconvenience. I’m an individual, a black sheep, a unique contrast to the norm. Guitar makers obviously don’t like these types of people as the range of right handed vs left handed guitars available is quite a difference. I found a nice jazz guitar from Hagstrom however, just down the road from me in fact, so I’m excited about it!

Some Marginally Interesting Musical Pieces

In Class the other day we were told to create a couple of genre based music pieces, minus the vocal part. These had to be done using the software Abelton Live which is a music creating software with lots of of midi samples and VST instruments. It had to be done using only midi with no actual recordings from us. The first one was in the style of a modern R&B song, so something you’d hear on MTV… well not MTV because they don’t play music, but one of those modern, hip music channels. The second song was to be based on Les Claypool from Primus’ theme from the popular TV show “South Park”.

R&B

For this i figured a strong bass line, with a deep bass drum and typical clapping snare drum sound would be most important. A simple chord progression and some synthesised strings helped create that modern sound and some automated reverb added interest, to the extent that interest could be added. Not some of my best work, but enjoy listening anyway.

South Park

For this I attempted to create a banjo sound and a drum beat with emphasis on the tom toms, but with limited sounds available i settled for second best, which happened to be a midi instrument suited more for early versions of Zelda, or some other kind of classic video game. Since I knew taking this seriously just wasn’t going to get me anywhere I decided to play with the comedic themes of south park and went for the double time drum beat, also finding a bass sound suited to that comedic, electronic style. This seemed to be working, so to top it all off I found some kind of ridiculous sounding synthesiser lead sound and slid across and bashed the keyboard to make something with resembled a solo. I am rather pleased with the end result of this however, as it reminds me of the pleasures of the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) and all the joys that came with that beautiful device. Sit back and listen, though I wouldn’t get too comfortable as it only goes for about 1 minute.

My name is Hughie Hanily. I’m a musician from Melbourne, Australia and am currently studying a Bachelor of Arts(Music Industry) at RMIT University.
